Prom in Aberdeen, Mississippi cancelled due to a request made by a student (McMillen) to bring her lesbian partner?Mississippi officials cancelled a prom scheduled for April 2nd after telling a federal judge that there were issues with the event even before the request made. They say the prom is a liability issue because of the possible use of alcohol and drug use at a school-sponsored event. Not only that, but they also say they called it off because McMillen's request had caused disruptions at the high school(Located in Fulton,Mississippi).
McMillen approached the school officials first in December and again on February 5th, shortly before a memo regarding the prom had been sent to students. In the past, same-sex prom dates had been banned but she hoped that the school officials would grant her request.
Since the districts decision had been made McMillen and the Prinicipal Trae Wiygul have been bombarded with angry emails and dirty looks on campus.McMillen says "There were so many dirty looks, alot of people didn't like me very much." While Wiygul says " I've been called a bigot and homophobic."
The Americal Civil Liberties Union is suing in U.S. District Court to force the Itawamba County school district to sponsor the prom and allow Constance McMillen to escort her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo.
On the other hand, parents have now started organizing a prom. School officials say it is open to the public.
